Mathematics

Mathematics is a specific area of learning. Maths is taught through focus activities and opportunities within the provision to practice and embed learnt skills and knowledge. Maths activities can be explored in the different areas of provision, for example measuring in the water, money in the role play area and patterns in the paint area. Maths skills and activities include:

• Counting, ordering and writing numbers
• Matching numbers and quantity – understand number and its value
• Odd and even numbers
• Days of the week and months of the year
• Recognising and naming 2D and 3D shapes
• Recognising and making patterns
• Using mathematical vocabulary related to shape, size and time
• Time
• Money
• Problem solving – addition and subtraction
