At Errington we know that the ability to read is the most important skill a child can master. We teach early reading through synthetic phonics, following the Ruth Miskin Read, Write Inc Phonics programme. Children are taught daily in small groups by staff trained in the teaching of synthetic phonics. Children are assessed every 6 weeks with the aim that the children move through the programme at pace until they become fluent, confident readers. With success in the basics of decoding words, pupils will then be able to move on to reading with increased fluency and speed, which will enable them to develop a love of reading for pleasure and the habit of reading for pleasure.
Errington Primary was in the top 4% of the country for Phonic screening results in 2023.
